What's Actually Included in a Tanzania Safari Package? A First-Timer's Checklist

Booking your first safari is exciting, but the fine print can be confusing. Two Tanzania safari packages priced a few hundred dollars apart can look identical on the surface and still deliver completely different trips. Before you hand over a deposit, it helps to know exactly what you're paying for and what you'll still need to budget separately.

This checklist walks you through the standard inclusions, the common exclusions, and the questions worth asking before you commit.

What Most Tanzania Safari Packages Include

While every operator packages things a little differently, most mid-range and luxury safari itineraries cover the following as standard.

Park Fees and Conservation Levies

Tanzania's national parks and conservation areas charge daily entry fees, and these are usually built into your package price. This typically includes access to parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, along with any crater service fees if your route includes a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater.

Accommodation

Lodging is one of the biggest cost drivers, and packages generally specify whether you're staying in permanent lodges, semi-permanent tented camps, or basic mobile camping setups. Budget packages often use shared or basic tented camps, while mid-range and luxury options include private lodges with en-suite bathrooms and full-board meals.

Ground Transport and Game Drives

A safari vehicle (usually a 4x4 with a pop-up roof), a driver-guide, and fuel for game drives are almost always included once you're in Tanzania. This covers transfers between parks and the scheduled game drives listed in your itinerary.

Meals During the Safari

Once your safari starts, meals are typically included breakfast, lunch, and dinner at your lodge or camp. Bottled water during game drives is also commonly included, though this varies by operator.

What's Usually NOT Included

This is where first-timers get caught off guard. Read your quote carefully for these common exclusions.

International and Domestic Flights

Your flight into Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport is almost never part of the package price. If your itinerary includes a scenic flight between parks (common on longer trips), confirm whether that's bundled in or billed separately.

Visa Fees

Tanzania requires a visa for most foreign visitors, either obtained in advance online or on arrival. This cost is your responsibility and is rarely folded into a safari quote.

Travel Insurance

A good travel insurance policy, ideally one that covers medical evacuation, is essential for safari travel but is almost never included. Given how remote some parks are, this isn't a step to skip.

Tipping

Tipping your driver-guide and camp staff is customary and expected, but it's a separate cash expense. Most operators can give you a suggested daily tipping range if you ask.

Personal Gear

Binoculars, specific safari clothing, insect repellent, and personal medication are on you to bring or buy locally.

Red Flags to Watch For in Cheap Packages

A significantly cheaper quote isn't automatically a scam, but it's worth understanding why the price is lower before you book.

Vague Itineraries

If the quote lists "3 days safari" without naming specific parks, drive times, or the number of game drives per day, ask for clarification. Vague itineraries sometimes hide long driving days disguised as park time.

Shared Vehicles With Strangers

Some budget operators fill vehicles with unrelated travellers to cut costs. This isn't inherently bad, but you should know in advance if you're paying for a private vehicle or a shared one.

No Verifiable Reviews or Licensing

Legitimate Tanzanian tour operators are registered with the Tanzania Tourist Board. If a company has no verifiable reviews, no physical address, or resists sharing licensing details, treat that as a warning sign.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Before confirming any safari, it's worth getting clear answers to these:

  • Are park fees and conservation levies included in the quoted price?
  • How many people will share my safari vehicle?
  • What's the meal plan full board, half board, or bed and breakfast?
  • Is airport transfer included on arrival and departure days?
  • What happens if a game drive is cut short due to weather or vehicle issues?
  • Can I see a day-by-day breakdown of the itinerary, not just a summary?

Planning Beyond Tanzania

If your trip spans more than one country, it's worth comparing itineraries early. Many travellers pair their Tanzania safari with neighbouring Kenya tours to see the wider Great Migration route or visit the Maasai Mara alongside the Serengeti.

Final Thoughts

A well-priced safari package isn't necessarily the cheapest one — it's the one that's transparent about what you're getting. Once you know what's standard, what's typically extra, and which questions to ask, comparing quotes becomes far less stressful. Take the time to read the fine print, and don't hesitate to ask an operator to walk you through their itinerary line by line before you book.
