Will Solar Panels Keep Working During a Power Outage? What Brisbane Homeowners Should Know

The lights go out, the fridge falls silent and the ceiling fan stops. Outside, the sun is still shining on your roof. If you have solar panels, it is reasonable to wonder why your home has lost power.

The answer often comes as a surprise. Most standard grid-connected solar systems stop supplying electricity during a power outage. Keeping household appliances running usually requires a system specifically designed and configured for backup power.

For Brisbane homeowners, understanding that difference matters before installation. Solar designed to reduce electricity bills and solar designed to provide blackout support involve different questions. A quote should make the capabilities clear.

Why does ordinary solar shut down during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected inverter detects when the electricity grid loses power and shuts down its supply. This automatic safety response is known as anti-islanding.

It prevents the solar system from feeding electricity into a network that may be undergoing repairs. The Australian Government identifies this as the reason very few grid-connected solar-only systems provide backup power during an outage.

Sunlight does not override that protection. Your roof might have plenty of panels and the outage might happen at midday, but a conventional installation still needs a working grid connection to operate normally.

When comparing solar panel systems in Brisbane households can install, ask specifically what happens when the grid fails. A system’s size alone does not tell you whether it can provide backup power.

Does adding a battery guarantee backup power?

A battery does not automatically mean your home will stay powered during a blackout. Backup capability must be supported by the equipment and included in the installation configuration.

Some batteries are installed primarily to store electricity for later use while the grid is available. The Australian Government advises that batteries must be configured for outage supply and that not all systems can provide it.

Before accepting a quotation, ask whether backup is included in the price. Request a description of the appliances or circuits it will supply and any limits that apply.

The phrase “battery ready” needs clarification too. Ask what additional equipment, electrical work or approvals would be needed to add a battery and enable backup later. A future option should be explained clearly.

Will backup power run the whole house?

Backup arrangements vary. Some installations supply selected circuits, while others are designed to support a wider range of household loads.

For many households, the starting point is deciding what matters most. You might prioritise the fridge, a few lights, phone charging and selected power points. Another household may have different needs because someone works from home or relies on particular equipment.

Do not assume that a powered socket means every appliance can run from it. Ask the installer to explain which circuits are included and which combinations of appliances the system can support.

Make that information part of the handover. During an outage, it should be easy to identify the backed-up outlets without searching through technical documents in the dark.

Understand the difference between power and stored energy

Two figures are useful when discussing backup: kilowatts, written as kW, and kilowatt-hours, written as kWh.

Power describes how much electricity equipment can supply at a particular moment. Stored energy describes the amount available to use over time. Battery capacity is commonly measured in kWh.

Think of the distinction as the difference between how much you can run at once and how long you can keep running it. A battery may contain enough energy for several hours of modest use while the backup output still limits which appliances can operate together.

Ask for both figures in plain language. “What can I run simultaneously?” and “What would typical essential use look like?” are more useful questions than simply asking whether the battery is large.

How long could your battery last?

There is no reliable answer based on battery size alone. The available charge when the outage begins and the appliances you use both matter.

As a simplified example, suppose 8 kWh is available for backup and the average load is 0.8 kW. Dividing energy by power gives a theoretical ten hours. Actual operation can differ because of system losses, operating limits and changes in appliance use.

A fridge cycles on and off. Lighting needs to change after sunset. Turning on an additional appliance can alter demand considerably. That is why a single runtime promise should be treated carefully.

Ask your installer for an estimate based on your proposed backup circuits. Have them explain the assumptions so you understand what would shorten or extend the expected runtime.

Can solar recharge the battery during an outage?

Some backup systems can use solar generation during a blackout to supply appliances and recharge the battery. Other arrangements rely on the battery’s existing charge because the solar inverter shuts down.

Australian Government guidance describes both configurations, which makes this an important question to settle before purchase.

Ask whether your proposed system can recharge while disconnected from the grid. Also ask what happens if the battery reaches its minimum charge overnight and whether the system can restart from solar the following morning.

These details become particularly relevant during an extended outage. Good weather may help a compatible system, but you should understand its actual capabilities rather than assume all solar-and-battery installations behave alike.

What about air conditioning during a Brisbane blackout?

On a warm Brisbane evening, keeping the air conditioner running may feel like a priority. It should be discussed during system design.

Ask whether your particular air conditioner is included in the backup arrangement and whether the system can handle its operating demand. The answer depends on the appliance and the equipment being installed.

Explain what you expect to use at the same time. Cooling one room while running the fridge is a different requirement from supplying several large appliances together.

If air conditioning backup adds substantially to the quote, ask for a second option focused on essential loads. Comparing the two designs can help you decide what level of support fits your needs and budget.

Plan for the battery’s charge before the outage

A backup-capable battery needs energy available when the grid fails. Discuss whether the system allows a reserve to be maintained for this purpose.

Ask how that setting works and whether it affects the battery’s everyday use. Keeping some energy available for outages may change how much can be used routinely to reduce grid purchases.

Have the installer show you the relevant controls during handover. You should know which settings you can adjust and which require professional assistance.

If the system offers a storm preparation function, ask what triggers it and what it actually does. Avoid relying on an app label without understanding the behaviour behind it.

What should you do when the power goes out?

First, establish whether the outage affects your property alone or the surrounding area. Energex recommends checking neighbouring properties safely and using its outage information for updates when the interruption is widespread.

If backup has activated, use the agreed essential circuits and avoid adding large loads without checking the operating guidance. Keep the household informed so someone does not accidentally exceed the system’s limits.

Following storm damage or flooding, keep away from affected electrical equipment. Energex warns that solar systems combined with floodwater or damage can present a serious electric shock risk. Do not assume everything is safe because the household lights are off.

Common questions about solar and power outages

Can solar panels provide power without a battery?

Most ordinary grid-connected installations cannot. Some specialised equipment offers limited daytime backup without a battery, but this must be confirmed for the exact system and installation. Ask what happens when sunlight changes and which outlets can be supplied.

Will switching to backup be instant?

Changeover behaviour depends on the equipment and configuration. Ask about the expected interruption if you want to support computers or other sensitive devices. Home backup should not be assumed to provide an uninterrupted supply.

Do you need to go off-grid to have backup?

No. A home can remain connected to the electricity network and have a properly designed backup arrangement. Discuss the level of outage support you want before choosing equipment.

Make blackout expectations part of the quote

Before installing solar panels, decide whether your main goal is lower electricity bills, backup support or both. Then ask for a written explanation of how the proposed system addresses those goals.

For Brisbane households, useful backup starts with specific decisions: which circuits matter, what can run together and whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage. Clear answers before installation help you understand what to expect when the lights next go out.
