Is Azerbaijan Easy to Visit as a First-Time Traveller? Here’s What You Should Know

While I was planning for a trip abroad for the first time Azerbaijan was not the first country that came to my mind. I was thinking of different countries like France, Italy, etc and while choosing it as an adventurous person it struck in my mind this Yanar Dag where the fire was burning Naturally on the land and the Mud Volcano which makes me feel curious to visit there.

Then I started looking more into it.

And then a modern capital, ancient towns, dramatic mountains, Caspian Sea views and a culture that feels like a meeting point between Europe and Asia — Azerbaijan became much more interesting than I expected.

But before booking the flight, I had a few practical questions: Is it easy to travel around? Is it expensive? What about the visa? And can a first-time visitor actually enjoy the country without knowing much about it?

Here’s what you should know.

🛂 First, Check the Visa Requirements

The first thing you have to do after making the decisions where your Destination is to check is whether your passport requires a visa.

Azerbaijan offers an Electronic Visa system for eligible nationalities, but requirements can be different depending on your citizenship & your travel document.

Don't leave this until the last minute. Because sometimes it takes longer than you imagine. Check the current requirements before booking your flights and make sure the information on your application matches your passport exactly.

🏙️ Baku Is a Good Starting Point

For a first visit, Baku is probably the easiest place to begin.

The city combines a historic Old City with modern architecture, restaurants, shopping areas and the Caspian waterfront.

You don't need to rush from attraction to attraction. Spend some time simply walking around and seeing how the old and modern parts of the city fit together.

🚗 Getting Beyond Baku

This is where the trip becomes more interesting.

If you have extra time, consider visiting places such as Gobustan, Sheki, Gabala or Quba.

The landscapes change quickly once you leave Baku, and you get to see a quieter side of Azerbaijan.

For some destinations, organised tours can be convenient, while independent travellers may prefer arranging private transport or checking local transport options.

💰 Is Azerbaijan Expensive?

Azerbaijan can work for different travel budgets.

Baku has everything from cheap local restaurants to high-end hotels and dining. Costs can be more manageable outside the capital, although prices depend of course on where you stay and what you do.

My advice is simple: set a daily budget before you arrive rather than trying to calculate every expense during the trip.

🍽️ Don't Leave Without Trying the Food

One of the easiest ways to understand a new country is through its food.

Try local dishes such as plov, dolma, qutab and kebabs. I tasted all of these during my trip, and honestly, every dish had its own charm. The plov was rich and comforting, the dolma was beautifully seasoned, the qutab was warm and crispy, and the kebabs had that irresistible smoky, juicy flavour. And of course, ending the meal with a cup of Azerbaijani tea and something sweet made the whole experience even better. 🍵

Even if you're not particularly adventurous with food, you'll find plenty of familiar options in Baku.

🗣️ What About Communication?

In tourist areas, especially in Baku, you can generally find people working in hotels, restaurants and travel services who can communicate with international visitors. But still then, learning a few simple local words and phrases is always useful.

And don't underestimate the value of having your destination and hotel address saved on your phone.

🌄 Give Yourself More Than Just a Weekend

If you're travelling all the way to Azerbaijan, don't plan your entire trip around Baku.

A few days in the capital can give you a good introduction, but adding another destination allows you to experience the country's mountains, history and smaller towns.

Even an extra two or three days can make the trip feel much more complete.

✈️ So, Is Azerbaijan Easy for a First-Time Traveller?

Yes — with a little preparation.

The biggest mistake would be treating Azerbaijan as just another short city break.

Research your visa requirements, plan your transport, choose your destinations carefully and leave some room for unexpected discoveries.

Because that's probably the best thing about visiting somewhere less predictable.

You arrive with a plan, but you leave with a much bigger picture of the country than you expected.
