First Time in Saudi Arabia? Here's What Actually Helps to Know

Say "Saudi Arabia" to most people and they'll picture two things: endless desert, or glass towers rising out of it. Neither is wrong, exactly — but neither comes close to covering it either. There's ancient history carved into rock, coastlines that catch you off guard, mountains with actual fog, and cities that don't resemble each other at all. Here's a rough shape for a first trip, plus a few things worth knowing before you land.

Ease in through Riyadh

Riyadh is the natural starting point, mostly because it makes the contrast so obvious. One minute you're in a mall that could be in Dubai or Singapore, the next you're standing in a centuries-old neighborhood where the Saudi state actually began. That back-and-forth — modern ambition next to old roots — is really the whole country in miniature.

Where: Riyadh, central Saudi Arabia.

Then let AlUla reset your expectations

Nothing quite prepares you for AlUla. The sandstone cliffs look sculpted rather than eroded, and Hegra — Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site — sits among them like something out of a different century entirely, because it is. Beyond the tombs and rock formations, the old settlements scattered through the valley add a quieter, more human layer to the whole experience.

Where: AlUla, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Slow down in Jeddah

Jeddah has a completely different rhythm — slower, saltier, more relaxed. Spend a morning wandering Al-Balad, the old town, where coral-stone buildings and carved wooden balconies have stood for generations. Then let the afternoon drift toward the Red Sea. Add in some genuinely excellent food, and Jeddah ends up being the city most people wish they'd given more time to.

Where: Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia.

A few things worth knowing before you go

Saudi Arabia is opening up fast, but it's still a culturally conservative place, and a little awareness goes a long way. Dress modestly, especially near mosques or historic sites. Be mindful and respectful in religious spaces. And always ask before photographing anyone — it's basic courtesy, but it matters more here than in a lot of other places. Picking up a handful of Arabic greetings isn't necessary, but it tends to open doors (and conversations) that would otherwise stay closed.

Don't rush it

This isn't really a country built for a whirlwind itinerary. The regions differ enough — in landscape, pace, even climate — that trying to see everything in a few days flattens the experience. Give yourself room to actually notice the shift from one place to the next.

Travel through Saudi Arabia with an open mind and you'll find a country where centuries-old tradition and fast-moving modern life sit right next to each other, often on the same street. Plan with some care, be respectful of local customs, and leave enough gaps in the schedule for the trip to surprise you — because it probably will.
