If you have ever seen freshly done PMU brows and then looked at the same brows a few weeks later, you may notice a clear difference. The colour may look softer, the strokes less intense and the overall brow more natural.
For someone new to permanent makeup, this can be confusing. Did the pigment disappear? Did the colour change? Why did the brows look so dark immediately after the procedure?
The answer lies largely in the healing process.
A fresh PMU brow is not the finished result. The skin needs time to recover and the pigment can look different as the treated area heals and settles.
Why Do PMU Brows Look Darker After Treatment?
Immediately after a permanent makeup procedure, the brows often appear darker and more defined than the intended healed result.
Freshly implanted pigment is concentrated in the treated area, while temporary redness and inflammation can also affect how the colour is perceived. At this stage, it is too early to judge the final shade or pigment retention.
As the skin begins to heal, some pigment can be lost along with superficial skin cells. Other pigment remains within the skin and contributes to the healed result.
This is why freshly treated brows should not be used as the benchmark for how the finished brows will look.
What Happens During PMU Brow Healing?
The healing process happens gradually.
During the first few days, the brows may remain dark and defined. The treated skin then begins to repair itself and may become dry or flaky. As the superficial skin sheds, the brows can appear considerably lighter.
This stage can make clients worry that their pigment has disappeared. However, temporary lightening does not necessarily mean that the procedure has failed. The colour can continue to settle as the skin completes its healing process.
For both clients and beginner PMU artists, patience is important. The final appearance should be assessed only after the skin has had adequate time to heal.
Does PMU Pigment Actually Change Colour?
When someone says their PMU pigment has “changed colour”, they may actually be describing a change in how the pigment appears through the healing skin.
The amount of visible pigment, the condition of the skin and the way light interacts with the treated area can all influence its appearance.
There can also be longer-term changes. Pigment particles can undergo physical and chemical changes within the skin, while pigment formulation, application and environmental exposure can influence how permanent makeup looks over time.
This is why PMU pigment selection is not simply about choosing the colour that looks right immediately after treatment. An artist needs to consider the intended healed result.
Why Can the Same Pigment Heal Differently?
The same pigment and technique will not necessarily produce identical results on every client.
Skin characteristics, the condition of the treated area, application technique, pigment formulation and individual healing can all influence pigment retention and appearance.
Application depth is particularly important. Pigment implanted too superficially may not retain consistently, while inappropriate depth can affect how the pigment settles and how crisp the work remains.
For an artist, this makes skin assessment and pigment knowledge as important as the procedure itself.
Why Healed Results Matter More Than Fresh Results
It is easy for a beginner to judge their work by how clean and precise the brows look immediately after treatment. But a professional PMU artist needs to look further.
How well did the pigment retain? Did the strokes maintain their definition? Did the colour settle as expected? Did the healed brow retain the intended shape and balance?
These questions can only be answered by assessing healed work.
