IPMAT Rohtak vs IPMAT Indore: Which Should You Prepare For?

If you're planning to pursue management right after Class 12, you've probably come across two of the most popular entrance exams in India—IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak. At first glance, they seem quite similar. Both are conducted by prestigious IIMs, both lead to a five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), and both attract thousands of aspirants every year. Naturally, one question comes up almost every time: Which exam should you prepare for?

The honest answer is—you don't necessarily have to choose one over the other.

Most serious aspirants prepare for both because the syllabus overlaps significantly. However, the exam pattern, difficulty level, and selection process are different enough that you should understand them before planning your preparation. Knowing these differences can help you study smarter instead of simply studying harder.

Understanding the Two Exams

IIM Indore introduced the country's first Integrated Programme in Management and has built a strong reputation over the years. Because of its legacy, many students consider IPMAT Indore their first preference. The competition is intense, and candidates are expected to perform consistently across every section of the exam.

IIM Rohtak, on the other hand, has also become a popular choice among students looking to start their management journey immediately after school. While the institute is younger than IIM Indore, it has steadily established itself through quality academics and industry exposure. Many aspirants apply to both institutes because there is no downside to keeping multiple admission opportunities open.

Instead of asking which exam is "better," it makes more sense to ask which one matches your strengths.

The Exam Pattern Makes a Bigger Difference Than You Think

This is where most students begin to see the difference.

IPMAT Indore includes three sections, and one of them consists of Short Answer Questions in Quantitative Ability. Unlike multiple-choice questions, you can't rely on intelligent guessing here. You either know the answer or you don't. This makes conceptual clarity extremely important, especially in mathematics.

Another challenge is the sectional time limit. Once the allotted time for one section is over, you cannot go back to it. That means every section demands equal attention during your preparation.

IPMAT Rohtak follows a different approach. The paper is entirely objective, and Logical Reasoning is included as a separate section. Students who enjoy solving puzzles, arrangements, and analytical reasoning problems often find this pattern more comfortable. Since there are no short-answer questions, many candidates initially assume the exam is easier.

That assumption isn't always correct.

A relatively easier paper usually leads to higher scores across the board, which ultimately pushes the cutoff higher. In other words, you may find the questions less difficult, but you'll still need excellent accuracy to secure a good rank.

Is IPMAT Indore Really More Difficult?

This is one of the most debated topics among IPM aspirants.

In terms of question quality and mathematical depth, most students agree that IPMAT Indore is more challenging. The Quantitative Ability section often requires stronger fundamentals, quicker calculations, and better time management. Missing the sectional cutoff in even one section can end your admission chances, regardless of how well you perform overall.

However, that doesn't automatically make IPMAT Rohtak an easier exam to crack.

Rohtak may have a comparatively straightforward paper, but the competition remains fierce. Since many students score well, even a few careless mistakes can make a noticeable difference in your final rank. Accuracy becomes just as important as speed.

This is why experienced mentors rarely advise students to ignore one exam simply because it appears easier or tougher. Competitive exams are never decided by difficulty alone—they are decided by how well you perform compared to everyone else.

Should You Prepare Separately?

Not really.

Nearly 80–85% of the syllabus is common between the two exams. Topics such as Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Reading Comprehension appear in both. If your fundamentals are strong, you can comfortably prepare for both exams without doubling your workload.

Many students enrolled in IPMAT Online Coaching follow exactly this strategy. Coaching institutes usually complete the common syllabus first and later conduct separate mock tests and practice sessions for Indore and Rohtak. This approach saves time while ensuring that students become familiar with the unique requirements of each examination.
