Choosing the Right Forklift for Your Industry in Australia

There is no single "best" forklift. The machine that runs perfectly in a Dandenong distribution centre would struggle on a muddy building site in Geelong, and a forklift built for a timber yard would be overkill for a small retail storeroom.

The right choice depends on your industry: where the forklift works, what it lifts, how many hours it runs and how clean the air needs to be. Get those four things right and the decision between an electric forklift, diesel forklift, LPG forklift or petrol forklift becomes simple.

This guide walks through the most common Australian industries and shows which forklift suits each one, and whether forklift hire or a forklift sale usually makes more sense.

1. Warehousing and Distribution Centres

Best fit: electric forklift (LPG for mixed indoor and yard work)

Warehouses run on tight aisles, smooth concrete floors and long shifts. An electric forklift is the natural choice here. It produces no exhaust, runs quietly and turns sharply in narrow aisles. Reach trucks and order pickers, both electric, help you use high racking and save floor space.

If your forklifts also load trucks in an outdoor yard, an LPG forklift can be more practical, because a bottle swap takes minutes and the machine handles both environments.

Hire or buy? Most distribution centres buy a core fleet of new forklifts and add hire units for Christmas, end-of-financial-year and other peak seasons.

2. Cold Storage, Food and Beverage

Best fit: electric forklift

Where food is stored or handled, air quality is not optional. Exhaust fumes can contaminate products and breach food safety standards, so an electric forklift is the clear choice for food processing, cold rooms and beverage warehouses.

For freezers and chillers, look for electric models built for cold conditions, with sealed components and suitable battery protection. Lithium-ion batteries are popular in cold storage because they are designed for opportunity charging and need no watering.

Hire or buy? Because cold-storage forklifts are often specified for the conditions, many businesses buy a new forklift. Hire is useful for seasonal produce peaks.

3. Manufacturing and Factories

Best fit: LPG forklift (electric for clean or enclosed areas)

Factories often move heavy raw materials between the production floor, storage and a loading dock. An LPG forklift is the workhorse of Australian manufacturing. It delivers strong lifting power, refuels quickly and works indoors in well-ventilated areas.

For enclosed production lines or sites with strict air-quality rules, electric is the better fit. Attachments such as side shifters, fork positioners and rotators let one forklift handle several tasks. See our forklift attachments.

Hire or buy? Factories with steady, daily use usually buy. A used forklift is a cost-effective second or backup machine.

4. Construction and Building Sites

Best fit: diesel forklift or telehandler

Building sites mean gravel, mud, slopes and heavy, awkward loads such as bricks, steel and timber frames. A diesel forklift with pneumatic tyres has the torque and ground clearance to handle rough terrain. For lifting materials onto upper floors or over obstacles, a telehandler with its extending boom is often the smarter choice.

Hire or buy? Construction work is project-based, so forklift hire is usually the better option. You get the right machine for each stage of the build, delivered to site and collected when the job is done.

5. Timber Yards, Vineyards and Agriculture

Best fit: diesel forklift (LPG for sheds and packing areas)

Timber yards and farms combine heavy loads with uneven outdoor ground. Diesel forklifts handle long timber packs, bulk bins and fertiliser bags with ease. Vineyards and orchards often use a diesel or LPG forklift during harvest to move bins of fruit, then an LPG or electric unit inside the winery or packing shed.

Hire or buy? Harvest work is highly seasonal, which makes short-term hire very attractive. Timber yards with daily use typically buy, and a well-maintained used forklift can offer excellent value.

6. Retail, Trades and Small Business

Best fit: compact electric or LPG forklift

Hardware stores, landscape suppliers, tradies and small wholesalers often need a forklift for only a few hours a week, to unload deliveries or move stock. A compact electric or LPG forklift is usually enough.

Some older machines in this space are petrol forklifts, often dual-fuel petrol/LPG. Petrol can suit light, occasional outdoor use, but LPG is generally cleaner and cheaper to run, so most businesses now choose LPG or electric instead.

Hire or buy? For occasional use, a quality used forklift or a long-term hire plan is often the most cost-effective option.

Hire or Buy, New or Used: The Rule of Thumb

Across every industry, the same simple rule applies:

  • Forklift hire suits short projects, seasonal peaks and trialling a new fuel type before you commit.
  • A new forklift suits daily, multi-shift use where reliability, warranty and the latest safety features matter most.
  • A used forklift suits lighter or occasional use, backup machines and tighter budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best forklift for a warehouse?

For most indoor warehouses, an electric forklift is best. It produces no exhaust, runs quietly and suits tight aisles. If the same machine also works in an outdoor yard, LPG is a strong alternative.

Which forklift is best for rough terrain?

A diesel forklift with pneumatic tyres, or a telehandler, handles gravel, mud and slopes far better than an indoor forklift.

Can I hire a forklift just for harvest season?

Yes. Short-term hire is ideal for vineyards, orchards and farms that need extra lifting capacity for a few weeks or months each year.

Is a used forklift reliable enough for a busy site?

A well-maintained used forklift from a reputable dealer can work well on a busy site. Check its hours, service history and condition, and keep it on a regular service schedule.

Do you service forklifts on site?

Yes. Heavy Lift Forklifts provides servicing at your premises with fully equipped mobile service vans, as well as workshop servicing and repairs.
