Travelling to Myanmar in 2026 is not straightforward. Armed conflict continues in several parts of the country, and several governments are warning travellers against visiting certain areas or Myanmar as a whole.
Canada advises against all travel to Myanmar because of armed conflict, political violence, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest and detention, and other serious risks. The UK also advises against all travel to several states and regions and against all but essential travel to a number of others.
These warnings are not based only on older events.
On October 5, Reuters reported that military airstrikes on displacement camps in Rakhine State killed eight people over two days, according to local sources. The report came shortly after another deadly airstrike in Rakhine in late September.
Why Does the Risk Differ by Location?
Myanmar does not have the same security situation everywhere. Some tourist areas continue to receive visitors, but conditions can change quickly and movement between areas may be difficult.
The UK currently advises against all travel to Rakhine, Kachin, Chin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon and Sagaing, among other areas. Travel warnings also apply to several other regions, where governments advise people to travel only when necessary.
This is important when reading information about popular destinations. The presence of hotels, restaurants or tourism businesses in one area does not mean that the wider region is safe.
Bagan is a good example. Tourism is still taking place there, and local reporting in October said accommodation in the Bagan Ancient Cultural Heritage Zone was heavily booked for the Thadingyut holiday period.
Travellers should also check transport arrangements before travelling between destinations. Road routes and local access may change because of security conditions, and some areas may have additional restrictions for foreign visitors.
What About the Myanmar eVisa?
Eligible visitors can still apply for a Myanmar eVisa. Official information states that the tourist eVisa allows a 28-day stay and lists Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports and the Kawthaung land border checkpoint as entry points. It also notes that some areas are restricted for foreign tourists.
An approved visa only deals with entry requirements. It does not mean that every part of Myanmar is accessible or safe.
Anyone asking if Myanmar is safe to travel to in 2026 should check the latest advisory issued by their own government and look specifically at the places they intend to visit. The security situation can change quickly, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
