Solar Panels Ireland: Maximise Savings With Smart Meters

If you have solar panels in Ireland — or are thinking about getting them — a smart meter is the missing piece that unlocks your full savings potential. Together, solar panels and smart meters form one of the most powerful home energy combinations available to Irish homeowners right now.

Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Smart Meter and Why Does It Matter for Solar?

A smart meter is a next-generation electricity meter that records exactly how much electricity your home imports from the grid and exports back to it — in real time, every 30 minutes.

Before solar panels became commonplace, the traditional electricity meter was a simple, one-way device. Its sole job was to measure the electricity you imported from the national grid into your home. A smart meter changes everything. It measures two-way energy flow, meaning it can track both what you draw from the grid and what your solar panels send back to it.

The meter on the side of your house is the unsung hero of your solar system — it is the crucial piece of kit that determines how much you save and, more importantly, how much you get paid for the excess electricity you generate.

Do You Need a Smart Meter for Solar Panels in Ireland?

Yes — and it's now easier than ever to get one. You will need a smart meter to export and get paid. ESB Networks is rolling out smart meters nationwide, and if you do not have one yet, you can request an upgrade.

ESB Networks has stated it will upgrade 2.4 million meters as part of its National Smart Metering Programme. So if you don't already have one, it's only a matter of time — but requesting your upgrade sooner rather than later means you start earning from your solar panels sooner too.

How Smart Meters Help You Earn from Solar: The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)

Once your smart meter is installed and your solar PV system is registered, you become eligible for the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) — Ireland's scheme that pays you for every unit of excess electricity your solar panels send to the national grid.

Between bill savings and export income, solar delivers a strong financial return for most Irish households. There is also an income tax disregard of €400 per year for microgeneration income, meaning the first €400 you earn from exporting electricity is completely tax-free — and this disregard has been extended in Budget 2026 to the end of 2028.

Current CEG export rates from Irish suppliers include:

  • Pinergy: 25c per kWh
  • Electric Ireland: 19.5c per kWh
  • Energia: 18.5c per kWh

If you have a smart meter, there's no limit to how much electricity you can export. That means the more your solar panels produce beyond your home's needs, the more you earn.

Smart Tariffs: The Upgrade That Multiplies Your Solar Savings

A smart meter doesn't just let you earn from exports — it also unlocks access to time-of-use (TOU) tariffs, also known as smart tariffs. These plans charge different rates depending on the time of day, meaning you can shift energy-heavy tasks (washing machine, dishwasher, EV charging) to cheaper off-peak hours.

The cheapest smart meter plan in Ireland is currently around €1,245 per year, compared to roughly €1,333 for the cheapest flat-rate plan — a gap of nearly €90 a year. For homeowners with heat pumps, solar panels, or electric vehicles, the savings are larger.

And from June 2026, the opportunity gets even bigger. From 1 June 2026, every major electricity supplier in Ireland is required to offer a dynamic tariff — a plan where your unit rate changes every 30 minutes based on the wholesale price of electricity. For households with solar panels and a battery, it's the most significant change to home energy economics since the Clean Export Guarantee.

The smart strategy is simple: use your solar energy during the day, store the excess in a battery, and draw down that stored power during expensive evening peak hours — avoiding high grid rates entirely.

The Solar + Smart Meter + Battery Combination

Adding a home battery to your solar panels Ireland system takes smart meter savings to the next level.

A battery lets you buy electricity when it's cheap and use it when it's expensive. Without a battery, dynamic tariffs are mostly about remembering not to run the tumble dryer at 6pm. With one, your home becomes a small arbitrage operation — and the savings can be hundreds of euros a year on top of what your panels already deliver.

The expansion of smart meter rollouts in 2026 allows for real-time tracking of export revenue, making solar more profitable for Irish homeowners than ever before.

How Much Can You Actually Save?

A typical 3.5 to 4 kWp solar system in Ireland saves €700 to €1,100 per year through reduced bills and export income under the Clean Export Guarantee. Add a smart tariff and a battery, and that figure climbs significantly higher.

For EV owners, the gains are even more dramatic. Charging an EV at off-peak rates instead of standard rates saves around €700–€900 in savings on top of the solar and battery numbers above.

Tips to Maximise Savings with Solar Panels and a Smart Meter in Ireland

  • Run appliances during the day when your solar panels are generating — dishwashers, washing machines, and tumble dryers all benefit.
  • Switch to a smart tariff to take advantage of lower night-rate electricity for anything you can't shift to daytime.
  • Add a battery to store surplus solar energy and avoid drawing from the grid during expensive evening peak hours.
  • Monitor your generation and export data through your smart meter — most suppliers offer an app or online portal.
  • Register for the Clean Export Guarantee through your electricity supplier once your solar system is installed and your NC6 is submitted.
