How to Claim Input Tax Credit Under GST

To claim input tax credit under GST, a registered business must hold a valid tax invoice, receive the goods or services, ensure the supplier has reported the invoice so it appears in GSTR-2B, and then report the eligible amount in Table 4 of GSTR-3B. The claim is subject to strict conditions and a hard deadline.

Most business owners first hear about input tax credit when they realise the GST they paid on purchases can be set off against the GST they collect on sales. Done right, it improves cash flow. Done wrong, it leads to notices, interest and reversal of credit. The process is straightforward once you understand the sequence and the rules that sit behind it.

Start with a clean purchase. The supplier must issue a proper tax invoice that shows both GSTINs, the invoice number and date, taxable value, tax rate and tax amount. Keep the invoice, delivery documents and e-way bill (if applicable) together. Without these, credit cannot be claimed even if the money has already left your account.

Next comes the matching step. Every month the GST system generates GSTR-2B on the 14th. This statement lists the invoices your suppliers have reported in their GSTR-1. You should download it and match it line by line against your purchase register. If an invoice is missing, follow up with the supplier immediately and ask them to file or amend their return. Credit is restricted to what appears in GSTR-2B. You cannot claim on the basis of the invoice alone.

Once the match is clean, you claim the credit while filing your monthly or quarterly return. In GSTR-3B you enter the eligible amounts under Table 4A and any reversals under Table 4B. The net figure is the credit available for that tax period. This net amount is then used to offset your output tax liability before you pay any balance in cash.

The law lays down clear eligible ITC conditions. You must be a registered taxpayer (composition dealers cannot claim). You must possess a prescribed document. The goods or services must have been received. The supplier must have paid the tax to the government and filed the relevant return. You must have filed your own return. All of these must be satisfied together.

GST invoice requirements are non-negotiable. The invoice must contain the supplier’s and recipient’s GSTIN, a unique invoice number and date, description of goods or services, HSN or SAC code where required, taxable value, tax rate and tax amount. Invoices from composition dealers or simple cash memos do not qualify.

Certain expenses are permanently disallowed. These blocked credits under GST include motor vehicles used for personal transport (with limited exceptions), food and beverages, club memberships, life and health insurance (except when mandated by law or when the same benefit is provided to employees as part of a taxable supply), and works contract services for construction of immovable property (other than plant and machinery). Credit on these items cannot be claimed even if the invoice is perfect and appears in GSTR-2B.

Payment discipline also matters. Under the 180 day payment rule, if you have not paid the supplier the full invoice value (including tax) within 180 days of the invoice date, you must reverse the proportionate credit along with interest. Once you make the payment later, you can reclaim the credit. Many businesses miss this and face unexpected reversals during audits.

The ITC time limit is absolute. Credit pertaining to a financial year must be claimed by the earlier of 30 November of the following year or the date of filing the annual return for that year. After this date the credit lapses permanently. For invoices issued in the financial year ending 31 March 2026, the last date to claim is 30 November 2026 (or earlier if the annual return is filed before that).

When you purchase from an unregistered supplier under reverse charge, you pay the GST yourself and then claim the credit, subject to the same conditions. In such cases you issue a self-invoice. The reverse charge mechanism therefore creates both a liability and a corresponding credit opportunity, but only if the documentation and payment conditions are met.

Accurate books make the entire process smoother. Many growing companies choose accounts outsourcing so that invoice matching, GSTR-2B reconciliation and return filing are handled systematically rather than left to the last week of the month. This reduces the chance of missing credits or claiming ineligible amounts.

Newly incorporated companies should plan GST registration early so that input tax credit on pre-incorporation expenses can be claimed after the certificate of registration is issued, subject to the conditions in the relevant forms. Our team regularly assists clients with company formation in India and the subsequent GST set-up so that early-stage credit is not lost.

Regular review of the credit ledger also helps. An independent check of whether the claimed credits match the underlying documents and GSTR-2B can surface issues before a department notice arrives. Professional auditing services often include this review as part of the year-end process.

Businesses that supply both taxable and exempt goods or services must apply the proportionate reversal rules. Credit on common inputs is restricted to the taxable portion. The calculation is done every month and adjusted annually. Getting this wrong is a frequent source of disputes.

If you are unsure whether a particular expense qualifies, check the blocked-credit list first and then verify whether the invoice appears in GSTR-2B. When in doubt, it is safer to reverse and reclaim later than to claim and face interest plus penalty.

The same discipline applies to capital goods. Credit on machinery and equipment is available provided the goods are used in the course of business. If the capital good is later sold or used for exempt supplies, proportionate reversal may be required. Keep the purchase documents and the depreciation records together for the useful life of the asset.

Foreign companies setting up operations in India through a liaison, project or branch office must also evaluate whether their local expenses generate eligible credit. While the structure of the presence differs, the basic ITC conditions remain the same once GST registration is obtained. Guidance on starting a business in India usually covers the GST implications at the planning stage.

Finally, maintain a simple monthly checklist: download GSTR-2B, match invoices, identify missing or mismatched entries, compute any required reversals (blocked credits, 180-day rule, exempt proportion), enter the figures in GSTR-3B, and file on time. A short written note of any follow-up with suppliers creates a record if the department later questions a claim.

Claiming input tax credit under GST is not complicated, but it is unforgiving of poor records or late action. Businesses that treat the monthly matching exercise as a routine rather than a year-end scramble recover more credit and face fewer notices. If your current process leaves credits unclaimed or creates frequent mismatches, a short review of your purchase register against GSTR-2B is the fastest way to quantify the gap.
