Not every fixture builds a reputation for delivering history, but Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have managed it twice in as many years. Beneath those headline moments lies a rivalry that stretches all the way back to the league's first season.
Where the Rivalry Began
KKR and Kings XI Punjab (as PBKS were then known) first met in 2008, and it didn't take long for their contests to become box-office. That reputation was cemented in the 2014 indian premier league Final, played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Punjab, who had finished top of the table that season, set KKR a target of 200, built on Wriddhiman Saha's unbeaten 115 off 55 balls and Manan Vohra's 67. Kolkata got there with three balls to spare, riding on Manish Pandey's 94 off 50 deliveries — an innings that won him the Player of the Match award and sealed KKR's second title.

Numbers tell part of the story here. By the start of 2026, the sides had played 35 times, and KKR held a firm 21-13 lead, with one no-result. The gap is even wider on home turf: at Eden Gardens, KKR have won 9 of 14 meetings against Punjab, with just 4 going the other way and one abandoned.
Two Seasons, Two Records

First came the chase. On April 26, 2024, at Eden Gardens, KKR posted a massive 261/6, powered by Phil Salt (75) and Sunil Narine (71). It should have been enough — instead, Punjab chased it down in 18.4 overs, finishing 262/2 behind Jonny Bairstow's blistering unbeaten 108 off 48 balls, with support from Shashank Singh (68*) and Prabhsimran Singh (54). It remains the highest successful run chase in history.
Then came the defence. Almost exactly a year later, on April 15, 2025, at Mullanpur, Punjab were bowled out for just 111 — a total that looked well short of competitive. KKR appeared cruising at 62/2, but a collapse to 95 all out handed Punjab a 16-run win. Yuzvendra Chahal's 4/28 and Marco Jansen's 3/17 helped Punjab defend the lowest total ever successfully protected in history.
The Takeaway
Few fixtures anywhere in T20 cricket have produced a record-highest chase and a record-lowest defence within twelve months of each other.
