There are plenty of reasons to walk into a cafe. Maybe you need coffee before getting on with the day. Maybe you are meeting a friend. Sometimes you just want dessert and somewhere comfortable to sit for half an hour.

I tend to think a good cafe gets a handful of ordinary things right. Nothing complicated. Just things you notice once you are actually there.
Start With What You Like to Drink
A long menu is not automatically a good menu.
What matters is whether there is something you genuinely want to order. For one person that might be an espresso. Someone else may want a cappuccino, an iced drink or matcha.
It also helps when a cafe has enough choice for a group. You might be there for coffee while the person sitting across from you wants something completely different.
Food Can Change the Visit
There is a big difference between stopping somewhere for ten minutes and deciding to stay for lunch.
That is where food becomes important.
Sandwiches, wraps, breakfast dishes, pasta and desserts can turn a coffee stop into a proper meal. It is especially useful when two people meet without deciding beforehand whether they want coffee or food.
A varied menu simply gives you more flexibility.
Pay Attention to the Space
This is difficult to judge from a menu or a search result.
Once you arrive, though, you notice it quickly. Is there somewhere comfortable to sit? Does the place feel rushed? Would you bring a friend there?
The answers are personal. A cafe that works well for a quick takeaway may not be the place you choose when you want to sit and talk for an hour.
Look Beyond the Big Chains
