Why a Good Indian Restaurant in Amsterdam Can Still Be Hard to Find Online

Picture a place like Rasoi Amsterdam. Proper food, a loyal crowd, regulars who'd tell anyone to go. And yet on a quiet Tuesday the room is half empty, because the people who'd love it are standing on a street corner somewhere in the city, typing "indian restaurant near me" into their phones and seeing everyone but them.

That gap between how good a restaurant is and how easy it is to find is where most independent places lose money. It's also much more fixable than owners tend to think.

Amsterdam Makes This Harder Than It Looks

Amsterdam is a crowded dining city, and the people searching aren't one group. Locals look for a weeknight dinner or a delivery. Tourists want something reliable near their hotel and often search in English. Expats and visitors from nearby countries mix Dutch and English in the same breath. A single restaurant has to show up for all of them, on Google Maps, in regular results, and increasingly inside AI tools that give back a short list instead of ten links.

On top of that you're competing with booking and delivery platforms that rank for almost every food search. When someone types a cuisine and a neighbourhood, the first things they see are often aggregator pages, not the restaurants themselves. A place that leaves its own online presence half finished leaves the field to those platforms.

It Starts With the Boring Details

Open Google Maps and search for your own restaurant as a stranger would. Are the opening hours right, including holidays? Does the phone number work? Is the menu link pointing somewhere current, or to a PDF from two years ago? Are there recent photos, or just a handful from the opening week?

These sound trivial, but they're what Google and AI tools lean on when deciding whether a business is trustworthy enough to recommend. If three directories list three slightly different addresses, the system isn't sure which is right, and uncertain information tends to get skipped. The unglamorous clean-up work is usually the highest-value thing a restaurant can do first.

Reviews belong here too. Not just the star rating, but how recent they are and whether the owner replies. A reply can be two lines. It shows someone's home, and it adds fresh text that mentions real dishes.

Your Own Website Still Matters

Many restaurants let their website decay because most bookings come through other platforms. That's understandable, but it means the one page you fully control is doing the least. A good restaurant site answers the questions people actually ask. Is there a vegetarian or vegan section? Is the food spicy, and can it be adjusted? Do you take groups? Is there a set menu? Where's the nearest tram stop?

Write those answers plainly, on the page, not hidden inside images. A menu that exists only as a photo can't be read by a search engine, and it can't be read by an AI tool either. Text wins here, boring as that sounds.

Where Dedicated SEO Work Fits

At some point, most owners ask whether they should hire someone. That's reasonable, and it's worth knowing what to look for. Proper seo restaurants work is mostly about the local foundations: rebuilding the Google Business Profile, tidying citations, adding structured data so menus and reviews are machine-readable, and writing content that answers real diner questions. Ads can sit alongside that, though they stop working the day the budget does.

Be a little sceptical of anyone who leads with a list of keywords and promises of page one in a month. Restaurant visibility builds over months, and the early weeks are mostly invisible repairs. A provider who can explain that honestly is usually more trustworthy than one who can't.

Photos and Small Updates Count More Than You'd Think

Fresh photos do two jobs. They persuade the person scrolling, and they signal that the place is actively run. A new dish, a busy Friday night, a seasonal menu, even a short post about a festival special. None of it needs to be polished. Real and recent beats stylised and old. A profile that gets something small every couple of weeks looks alive. One that goes quiet for months and then dumps twenty photos doesn't.

The AI Question

More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI features for a recommendation, something like "good Indian restaurant in Amsterdam with vegetarian options". The answer is a short list, and if you're not on it, you never know you lost the table.

You can check this yourself in five minutes. Ask a few different versions of that question and see whether your restaurant appears, and what's said about it. If the description is wrong, outdated or missing, that points straight at what to fix, usually inconsistent listings or thin website content. Check again every couple of months. It's a rough benchmark, but it's free and it's honest.

A Realistic Way to Start

You don't need to do everything at once. In the first week, correct every listing and make sure the details match. In the second, rewrite the main pages with real information about your menu, your atmosphere and how to get there. After that, ask happy guests for reviews, reply to the ones you have, and add fresh photos regularly.

Then see what actually changes: calls, bookings, and how many guests mention finding you online. Ask at the door if you have to. That tells you more than any dashboard score.

None of this needs a big budget or a rebrand. Fix the listings, put real answers on your website, keep asking for reviews, and check every couple of months where you show up. Most restaurants never get that far, which is a big part of why it works.
