Investigate the Investigator Before You Hand Over the Case

Before any evidence is presented, one of the most sensitive things a private investigator learns about a client is the information they possess. For anyone considering a private investigation company in malaysia, this is an important part of the due diligence process.

The first things discussed may include names, telephone numbers, photos, company histories, relationship histories, and financial information. However, people don't spend much time researching the investigator as they do when researching a contractor in their own home.

Malaysia provides a straightforward starting point for clients.

Check the licence yourself

The Private Agencies Act 1971 regulates private investigation and security companies in Malaysia. The Ministry of Home Affairs provides an online eSIMS service for individuals to check whether the licence of a private investigator or security agency is valid for the current year. It is worth noting that KDN encourages people to report companies found operating without a licence.

This issue has acquired special importance in 2026. In May, KDN stated that some private-agency licences had been renewed and that these companies must continue to renew their licences.

Before choosing any private investigation company in malaysia, check the information via the official site.

Define what you actually need to establish

The short instruction to "find out everything" does not make for an efficient investigation brief.

The company may need to determine whether an employee is failing to meet a contractual agreement. Assistance with identifying the parties involved and documenting the events would be helpful to an individual who is the target of fraudulent activity.

These situations have to be treated differently because they require different types of evidence.

If you are considering surveillance or other types of investigation, it would be useful to consult with a professional investigator to refine your inquiry. This will allow the client to consider the relevance and value of the information to their situation.

Be wary of impossible promises

An investigator who claims to have unlimited access to private information is one of the biggest red flags to look out for.

A private investigation firm in Malaysia must operate within the law, and when a firm is hired by a client, it cannot use shortcuts to access another person's private information, such as their bank account, private communications or confidential government files.

The processing of personal information during the conduct of business, where the Act is applicable, is covered under Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act.

The client should ask how the information will be accessed, stored, shared, and eventually disposed of.

Anyone reluctant to provide this information should be investigated thoroughly.

Ask about the report before the investigation begins

Evidence is useful only if the client can understand where it came from and what it actually demonstrates.

Before commissioning work, establish:

  • what the final report will contain;
  • whether photographs or supporting records are included;
  • how progress will be communicated;
  • how fees and additional expenses are approved;
  • who inside the company will have access to the case.

A knowledgeable private investigation company in malaysia should have no difficulty discussing these matters before receiving confidential information.

In general, a private investigation usually begins when an individual has doubts about a particular person or situation. This is why it becomes even more critical not to add yet another reason for doubt.

Check the licence. Define the issue. Understand the investigation and reporting processes.

The private investigation should begin only after the client has completed some due diligence.
