Should I Sell on Kijiji or Take a Cash Offer?

Straight answer: if your car runs well, is registered, and would pass an inspection, sell it privately. You'll get more money, sometimes considerably more, and it's worth the effort.

If it doesn't run, can't be registered, or needs repairs approaching what it's worth, private sale usually costs you more in time and hassle than it returns.

Most vehicles are clearly one or the other. This article is about the ones in between — and about the costs of private sale that nobody puts a number on.

Where the line actually falls

Sell privately when:

  • It runs and drives reliably
  • Registration is current, or easily made current
  • It would pass an out-of-province or commercial inspection if asked
  • You have four to six weeks of flexibility
  • Someone would buy it to drive, not to dismantle

Take a cash offer when:

  • It doesn't run, or runs unreliably
  • It failed inspection, particularly on structural corrosion
  • Repairs are approaching or exceeding the vehicle's value
  • You have a hard deadline — a move, a closing date, a bylaw notice
  • It's been sitting for years
  • You genuinely don't want to deal with strangers

The overlap zone is roughly a running vehicle worth two to four thousand dollars with a known problem. That's where the honest answer is "it depends how much your time is worth."

What private sale actually costs you

The listing is free. Everything else isn't.

Your time. A realistic private sale on a cheap car means writing the ad, taking photos, answering messages, arranging viewings, and being available when strangers are. Across a few weeks, that's easily five to ten hours. Put your own hourly figure against it.

No-shows. Anyone who has sold a cheap car on Kijiji or Marketplace knows the pattern: four people message, three vanish, one arrives late. On a low-value vehicle the ratio is worse, because the people messaging are the least committed buyers in the market.

Negotiation on a car that has problems. If it doesn't run, every conversation is a negotiation about what's wrong with it. Buyers who want non-running vehicles are almost always people who do this professionally — they'll price it as a project, and they're better at valuing it than you are.

Insurance and registration while it sits. If you're keeping it road-legal to allow test drives, you're paying for that during the entire selling period.

Safety and hassle. Strangers at your home, handing keys to someone for a test drive, meeting in parking lots. Manageable with sensible precautions. Not free of cost.

The scams worth knowing about

Private vehicle sales attract a consistent set of them:

Overpayment. A buyer sends more than the asking price and asks you to refund the difference. The original payment reverses later. Never refund an overpayment — cancel the transaction.

Fake e-transfer confirmations. A screenshot showing a transfer that hasn't happened. Confirm the money is in your account, from your own banking app, not from anything they show you.

Fraudulent bank drafts and cheques. They clear initially, then get reversed. On a cheap car, cash or a verified e-transfer only.

"My mechanic needs to look at it" — followed by a request to let the vehicle go somewhere without payment. No.

Deposit-then-vanish. A small deposit to "hold" it while they stop responding, and you stop showing it to real buyers.

Curbers. Unlicensed dealers posing as private buyers, flipping vehicles without disclosure. Not a risk to you as a seller so much as a sign of who you're dealing with — they'll negotiate hard and they know more than you do.

None of this makes private sale a bad idea. It makes it a thing that requires attention, which is a cost.

What each route actually pays

Private sale, running car in good order. Highest return, and worth the work. A reliable vehicle with current registration commands real money in Calgary.

Private sale, non-running or problem car. Here's what people don't anticipate. You'll be dealing with the same buyers a cash-for-cars company represents — people who dismantle and resell. Except you'll spend three weeks finding them, negotiate individually, and probably arrange towing yourself. The final figure often isn't much better than a straightforward offer, and sometimes it's worse.

Cash offer. Lower ceiling, but certain, immediate, includes towing, and requires nothing from you beyond a phone call and being present. See how it works and what determines the number.

The dealership trade-in, since people ask

Worth a mention as the third option. A trade-in is convenient and the value gets folded into a new purchase — which also makes it the hardest to evaluate, because the trade figure and the purchase price are negotiated together and can be shuffled between each other.

If you're buying a car anyway and the vehicle still has retail value, get a trade number. Then get a separate cash quote and compare properly. On a vehicle a dealer doesn't want on their lot, the trade offer will typically be low, because they're planning to wholesale it.

A practical way to decide in ten minutes

Get one cash quote. It's a phone call, it's free, and it gives you a floor.

Look up three comparable listings for your year, make and model on Kijiji or Marketplace in Calgary. Not asking prices from anywhere — Calgary, and note how long they've been listed.

Subtract realistically. Cheap cars sell below asking, and a car listed for six weeks is priced wrong.

Compare the gap to your effort. If private sale nets you fifteen hundred more, do it. If it nets two hundred more and takes a month, you've answered your own question.

Weigh your deadline honestly. A deadline collapses your negotiating position. If you have three weeks and a moving date, you'll end up taking whatever's offered in week three — and you'll have spent three weeks getting there.

One thing to be careful about

If you sell privately, do the paperwork properly. A signed, dated bill of sale with the correct VIN, and take your plates off. This protects you after the vehicle leaves — tickets, collisions, or an abandonment complaint on a car still associated with your name are all real risks. See what a bill of sale is and where to get one.

Also, Alberta issues no vehicle title, so ignore any American advice about signing one over. Registration certificate and bill of sale is what a sale here actually requires.

If a cash offer is the right call

Citywide Cash for Cars buys running and non-running vehicles across Calgary and surrounding communities. Free towing, payment before the vehicle leaves your property, paperwork handled on site.

Call 4038371082 for a number to compare against. If your car is worth more sold privately, we'll tell you — and you'll still have a floor to negotiate from.
