A bathroom looks finished when the tiles are up and the fixtures are fitted. Whether it stays that way for ten years depends on work that disappears behind those tiles: waterproofing, falls to the drain, substrate preparation and ventilation.
If you are planning a bathroom renovation in Dubai, use this guide to focus attention where it counts.
Waterproofing is the real foundation
Water finds every weakness. A bathroom that is not properly waterproofed can lead to damp walls, lifted tiles, staining on the ceiling below and, in apartments, disputes with neighbours. Good practice includes a continuous waterproofing membrane across the floor and up the walls in wet areas, careful treatment of corners and pipe penetrations, and a flood test before any tile is laid.
Ask your contractor to explain their waterproofing method and testing process. If the answer is vague, treat that as a warning.
Get the levels and falls right
Shower floors need a consistent slope towards the drain so water never pools. This is set in the screed layer, long before the finish tile goes down. Large-format tiles look beautiful but are less forgiving of uneven substrates, so the preparation has to be exact.
Ventilation protects everything else
Humidity is a constant in this region. Without effective extraction, moisture settles on ceilings, mirrors and joinery and encourages mould. Check that the extractor is correctly sized for the room and actually ducted to the outside, not just to the ceiling void.
Choose tiles for performance as well as looks
• Slip resistance: floors and shower trays need appropriate grip, especially in family homes.
• Grout: fewer joints and quality grout make cleaning easier and reduce discolouration.
• Size and layout: large tiles give a clean look, but plan cuts and drain positions on paper first.
• Natural stone: beautiful, but needs sealing and maintenance. Confirm you are comfortable with the upkeep.
Fixtures: invest where you touch
Taps, shower mixers and thermostatic valves are used every day, so quality here is felt immediately. Well-known manufacturers such as Hansgrohe for taps and showers and Villeroy & Boch for sanitaryware are commonly specified in premium bathrooms. Whichever brand you choose, check spare-part availability locally and make sure concealed valves can be serviced without breaking the wall open.
Lighting and storage: small details, big difference
Use layered lighting: soft ambient light, brighter light at the mirror and a low-level night light if you like. All fittings near water must have suitable ingress protection ratings. For storage, plan niches and vanity drawers during the design stage. It is far easier to build them in than to retrofit them.
What a smooth bathroom project looks like
• Strip-out and inspection of existing pipes and drainage.
• Plumbing and electrical first-fix, with fixture positions confirmed.
• Screed, waterproofing and flood test.
• Tiling, then joinery and glass.
• Fixtures, lighting, sealing and final snagging.
A bathroom is a compact project, but it involves many trades working in tight sequence. Having one team coordinate plumbers, tilers, electricians and glass installers avoids the finger-pointing that happens when something leaks. That is the approach behind Mignon’s bathroom renovation service, where design, build and finishing are handled together.
Budget and timing
Costs are driven mainly by size, tile and stone choice, fixtures, joinery and how much plumbing is relocated. Moving a shower or toilet to a new position costs more than swapping fixtures in place, but it can transform how the room feels. Final thought
The best bathrooms are the ones you never have to think about again. Invest in the hidden layers, choose finishes for how they perform, and insist on testing before the tiles go down.
