Rwanda is compact, so many highlights can be combined in a few days from Kigali: mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, savannah wildlife in Akagera National Park, the canopy walkway in Nyungwe Forest, and the lakeside towns on Lake Kivu.
Gorilla trekking needs a permit booked in advance, and treks start early from Kinigi near Musanze. A 1-Day trek is possible from Kigali, while a 3-Day trip adds golden monkeys, Lake Burera or a volcano hike.
Akagera is about two to three hours east of Kigali and works well as a 2-Day safari. Nyungwe pairs well with Lake Kivu on a longer 5-, 7- or 10-Day tour.
When to go: Rwanda can be visited all year, but the long dry season from June to September and the shorter dry spell from December to February are the most popular times. Trails in the volcanoes and in Nyungwe are drier then, and wildlife in Akagera gathers near water. The rainy months are greener and quieter, with fewer visitors on the trails, so they can suit travellers who do not mind a few showers.
What to pack: bring sturdy walking boots, long trousers, a light rain jacket, garden gloves for gripping vegetation on gorilla treks, and layers for cool mornings in the mountains. A small daypack, sunscreen, insect repellent and a refillable water bottle are useful everywhere. Binoculars make a big difference on a game drive in Akagera and on the canopy walkway in Nyungwe.
Why travel privately: a private trip lets you set your own pace, stop for photos or coffee along the way, and adjust the plan to the weather or your energy levels. Kigali itself is worth a day too, with the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, craft shops and a growing café scene. Many travellers start or finish their trip in the capital before heading north to the volcanoes, east to the savannah or west to the lake.
Practical tips: Rwanda drives on the right, roads between the main parks are paved and in good condition, and journeys are short by African standards. Mobile money and cards are widely accepted in Kigali, but it helps to carry some Rwandan francs for small purchases in rural areas. Plastic bags are banned, and on the last Saturday morning of each month many businesses pause for Umuganda, the national community work day, so plan travel times around it.
