What Are Fossils?

How Do Fossils Form?

A majority of fossils develop in case a plant or animal is buried in layers of sediment after its death. Layers keep the dead body safe from decomposition and destruction by predators. With each passing year, layers are added one above the other turning into solid rock.

Minerals found in ground water can penetrate the body over millions of years replacing it or simply creating an impression of the dead body's structure. Not always complete bodies remain; sometimes only imprints of living organisms exist. Overall, the process of fossilization is rare since only a minority of ancient living creatures end up becoming fossils.

Types of Fossil Preservation

There are several ways fossils can be preserved:

Petrification

Minerals gradually replace the original organic material, turning the remains into stone while preserving their structure.

Compression

Pressure from layers of sediment flattens the remains, leaving a thin fossil impression.

Moulds and Casts

When an organism decays, it leaves a hollow impression called a mould. If minerals fill this space, a cast is formed.

Preserved Remains

Some organisms are preserved in ice, amber, tar, or dry environments, preventing decomposition.

Fossils are precious sources of information concerning evolutionary processes, extinctions, and environmental changes which took place millions of years ago. Thus, by means of studying the process of their formation and preservation, people get an insight into the life history of the earth. Moreover, the discovery of fossils contributes greatly to the development of our understanding of history.
