Our decision to bring our dog along
When my job transferred us to Melbourne, leaving our 7-year-old Labrador behind wasn't an option. He was family—kids grew up with him. So we committed to the full pet move.
Early planning saved us
We started 7 months out. First came the microchip check (ISO standard), updated vaccines, and the rabies antibody test Australia requires. We quickly realized the entire process is known as 寵物移民 here, and getting the timing right from the start made everything less overwhelming than we expected.
Vet visits piled up, but worth it. AFCD health cert endorsement came near departure. Australia import permit applied online—took weeks. Blood test results had to arrive before travel. We tracked every deadline.
Flight day nerves
Cargo only—IATA crate fitted perfectly (measured twice). Direct-ish route via Singapore. He got calming treats; we worried the whole flight. Landed, customs cleared fast after quarantine booking.
Quarantine in Australia
10 days minimum—government facility. We visited daily, costs added up, but he came out wagging. No health issues.
Why it was the right call
Kids settled faster with him there. He adapted to the backyard life. Looking back, the stress was temporary; regret of leaving him would last forever.
Lessons for other Hong Kong families
Budget extra for tests/quarantine. Don't DIY if timelines tight—mistakes cost months. Many in our expat circle did similar moves to UK/Canada—shorter processes, less quarantine.
If you're weighing 寵物移民, know it's tough but rewarding. Pet Travel helped us map it out step-by-step. Our dog is thriving down under—best family decision we made.
