Which Winsor & Newton Watercolour Should You Start With?

Standing in front of a wall of Winsor & Newton watercolour can feel like a lot. Two ranges, tubes and pans, and dozens of colour names you have never heard of. The choice is simpler than it looks.

The right starting point depends on three things: how you paint, where you paint and what you want the finished work to do. Get those three answers straight and the decision largely makes itself.

Two ranges, two jobs

Winsor & Newton makes two main watercolour ranges, and they are built for different stages.

Cotman is the student range. It is made with fine-art pigments at a friendlier price, which means it suits practice, sketchbooks and colour studies without worry about wasting expensive paint.

Professional Watercolour is the artist range. It is pigment-led, with detailed information on every colour: pigment code, transparency, staining and permanence. If you intend to sell work, frame it or paint to last, this is the range that gives you control.

Cotman is not “poor quality”. It is a different tool. A beginner who paints regularly with Cotman will improve faster than one who owns Professional paint and is afraid to use it.

Tubes or pans?

This is the question that affects daily painting more than the range does.

Pans are dry blocks of colour you wet with a brush. They are compact, tidy and ready in seconds. Choose pans for sketchbooks, travel and painting outdoors.

Tubes hold softer, more concentrated paint. You squeeze it into a palette and mix generous puddles. Choose tubes for larger paintings and big, even washes.

A simple rule: small and portable means pans; large and wet means tubes. Many painters end up with both.

Starting with Cotman

If you are new to watercolour, or returning after years away, Cotman is a sensible first purchase. It lets you learn how water, pigment and paper behave together, which is the real skill in this medium.

A small palette is enough. Most beginners do better with a handful of colours they understand than a huge set they cannot yet mix from. A warm and cool version of each primary (red, yellow, blue), plus a brown or earth colour, covers a surprising range of subjects.

Starting with Professional Watercolour

Professional paint rewards a more deliberate approach. Because each colour is documented, you can choose pigments for a purpose: a transparent blue for glazing, a granulating colour for texture, a non-staining colour you can lift out.

Buying individual 5ml tubes lets you build your palette colour by colour, which suits painters who already know what they want. Starting with five or six carefully chosen colours is more useful than a full set of unfamiliar ones.

A note on single-pigment colours: they are useful, not automatically superior. Two single-pigment paints mixed together introduce fewer pigments, so the result is easier to predict and repeat. Multi-pigment colours still earn their place when they give a convenient mixture or a particular effect. Use the pigment information as a guide to what each colour will do, rather than treating “single pigment” as a badge of quality.

Where watercolour paint sets make sense

For many beginners, watercolor paint sets are the most practical way in, because the colours are already chosen to work together. Cowling & Wilcox stocks Winsor & Newton sets alongside compact pan sets with a built-in mixing lid, so a painter can get everything for a first session in one case.

A set works best when it fits your habit. A pocket-sized pan set suits sketching on a train or a park bench. A larger folding set, with a reservoir brush and mixing space, suits a kitchen table or studio corner.

If you outgrow a set, you can usually replace single pans or add tubes of the colours you use most. Nothing is wasted.

Do not forget the paper

The best paint will disappoint on the wrong paper. Watercolour needs paper that can absorb water without buckling, and thin sketching paper will wrinkle under wet washes.

Look for dedicated watercolour paper, ideally 300gsm for wet work. Cotton paper takes water forgivingly, and cellulose paper is a good economical choice for practice. Tape or stretch lighter sheets if they ripple.

Brushes matter too, though less than beginners fear. One round brush of reasonable size, around a number 8, will do most of the work. A smaller one handles detail.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying too many colours at once. A small palette teaches mixing. A large one hides it.
  • Using too little paint. Watercolour dries lighter than it looks. Mix more than you think you need.
  • Choosing by price alone. A cheaper range suits practice. A pricier one suits finished work. Match the paint to the purpose.
  • Ignoring the paper. Thin paper makes any paint look worse.

A quick way to decide

If you want to learn and experiment, start with Cotman, in pans if you are going out and tubes if you are staying in.

If you already paint and want precision, start with a few Professional tubes chosen by pigment behaviour.

If you are unsure, a compact paint set is the lowest-risk first step. You can move to individual colours once you know which ones you reach for.

Final thoughts

The best Winsor & Newton watercolour to start with is the one you will actually use. Pick the format that fits where you paint, the range that fits your goals and a small palette you can learn thoroughly. Confidence in mixing comes from repetition, not from owning more paint.
