What Should I Expect During a Professional Maternity Photoshoot?

The dress looks lovely on the hanger, but wearing it in front of a camera is a different matter. You arrive at the studio, change into your outfit, and suddenly realise you have no idea what to do with your hands. Should you look at the camera? Turn sideways? Hold your belly? And what if your partner feels just as awkward as you do?

These are the sorts of things worth knowing before a maternity photoshoot. The photographs may look effortless when you see the finished results, but there is usually a fair amount of adjusting, trying different positions and figuring out what works for each person.

The First Few Minutes Can Feel a Little Awkward

Unless you are used to being photographed professionally, you probably won't walk into the studio knowing how to pose. That is perfectly fine.

The photographer may start with a few simple portraits to help you get comfortable. You might stand near a window, turn slightly towards the light or try a photograph looking away from the camera. After a few frames, you begin to understand what the photographer is asking for, and the session starts to feel less unfamiliar.

It also helps to speak up about the photographs you want. Perhaps you have always imagined wearing a traditional saree, or you prefer a simple portrait with no elaborate background. Show the photographer a couple of examples and explain what caught your attention. You don't need to arrive with a complete plan for every photograph.

Choosing an Outfit Is Only Half the Job

A maternity gown can look quite different once you put it on and move around in it. The same applies to a saree, particularly when the drape and pleats are meant to be part of the photograph.

Think about the style you want before choosing your clothes. A traditional saree may suit a portrait with jewellery and a carefully arranged backdrop. A flowing gown might work better for a softer, more dramatic look. If you would rather have something simple, an outfit you already feel comfortable wearing can be a good choice.

There is no need to pack five outfits just because other maternity photographs feature several changes. One or two well-chosen looks may be enough, depending on your package.

Before the appointment, ask whether the studio provides maternity gowns, whether changing facilities are available and how many outfit changes are included. If you are bringing your own clothes, pack the accessories you need along with them. It is frustrating to plan a particular look and then discover that the matching jewellery or footwear has been left at home.

Nobody Expects You to Know How to Pose

A common worry is that the photographs will look stiff because you aren't a model. In practice, you don't need modelling experience to take part in a maternity session.

The photographer might ask you to turn your shoulders slightly, shift your weight, rest your hands around your belly or look towards a particular point. Sometimes, changing your position by just a little makes a photograph look more natural.

You can also say when something doesn't feel right. If standing in a particular position becomes uncomfortable, ask to change it. If you don't like the way an outfit sits, take a moment to adjust it.

It is worth remembering that a pose which looks beautiful on another person may not be the most comfortable or flattering choice for you. Reference photographs are useful for explaining a style, but they shouldn't become a list of positions you must reproduce.

What If Your Partner Feels More Nervous Than You?

This happens often enough to be worth planning for. One person may be excited about the photographs, while the other has no idea where to stand or what expression to make.

The solution isn't to practise complicated poses beforehand. Simple interactions can be more comfortable: standing close together, holding hands, talking to each other or looking at the baby bump.

If you want photographs with your partner, mention it while booking rather than adding it as an afterthought. The photographer can leave time for individual maternity portraits as well as photographs of you together.

Older children can join too, provided the session is planned around them. A child who has been waiting quietly for a long time may become restless just when the family photographs begin. Bringing a familiar toy or snack and choosing a time when the child is usually rested can help.

How Long Should You Set Aside?

Don't judge the length of a maternity session by the number of photographs you expect to receive. Taking a picture is only one part of the appointment.

Time may be needed to arrange an outfit, adjust the lighting, try another background or change from individual portraits to family photographs. Multiple outfits and elaborate styling add to the schedule.

Ask the studio how long your chosen package normally takes. If you prefer to sit down between sets or need to avoid standing for long periods, mention that beforehand. The session should be planned around your comfort rather than making you rush through one pose after another.

Leaving some room in your schedule afterwards is sensible too. You won't have to watch the clock while trying to enjoy the experience.

The Details to Sort Out Before You Go

A quick conversation with the studio can prevent several small surprises on the day.

Confirm what the package includes, especially the number of outfits, background changes and edited photographs. Ask whether makeup, styling, gowns or accessories are included rather than assuming they come with the session.

If you have saved reference pictures, keep a small selection ready on your phone. Ten photographs showing completely different styles can make it harder to explain what you actually want; two or three clear examples are usually easier to discuss.

Think about who will be photographed, too. Individual portraits, partner photographs and pictures with older children all need time. If there is a particular family photograph you don't want to miss, mention it in advance.

Finally, be clear about any poses or positions you would rather avoid. You shouldn't have to wait until the middle of the session to explain that something is uncomfortable.

Finding a Maternity Photographer in Bangalore

If you are looking around Whitefield, Kadugodi or Hope Farm, spend a little time examining complete maternity photography portfolios rather than choosing a studio from one attractive image.

Look at the variety of work. Are there traditional portraits as well as simpler photographs? Do different outfits and backgrounds look thoughtfully arranged? Are the expressions and poses varied, or does every photograph look almost identical?

These details can tell you more about whether the photographer's style matches your preferences. It is also reasonable to ask about the session process, available outfits and what is included before making a booking.

Sai Colours Studio in Bangalore offers maternity photography for expecting mothers. Anyone considering a session can discuss the preferred style and practical arrangements with the studio before booking.

You Don't Have to Make Every Photograph Perfect

It is easy to arrive with a folder full of inspiration and feel that every picture needs to match it. But the point of the session isn't to reproduce somebody else's maternity photographs exactly.

Some poses will feel more natural than others. You may prefer one outfit once you see it on camera, or find that a simpler background suits you better than the elaborate setup you originally chose. Allowing room for those decisions can make the experience more enjoyable.

Go in with an idea of what you like, ask questions when you need guidance and take breaks when necessary. You don't need to know how to pose before you arrive. That is part of what the photographer is there to help with.
