Preparing for JEE Main in Class 12 is not easy. There are school tests, practicals, assignments and board exam preparation, while JEE Main needs regular problem-solving and revision. Because of this, many students end up spending too much time on one exam and then struggle to keep up with the other.
The better approach is to connect both preparations wherever possible and keep the routine manageable.
Plan Your Week, Not Every Hour
A strict timetable may look good on paper, but it can become difficult to follow once school work and tests start piling up. A weekly plan gives more room to adjust.
For example, if there is a school test on Tuesday, that day can be used mainly for board preparation. On another day, more time can be given to JEE questions and revision. The main aim should be to complete the week's targets rather than worrying about whether every study session went exactly as planned.
Make Class 12 Chapters Work Twice
A large part of Class 12 preparation is useful for JEE Main as well. Instead of studying the same chapter separately for boards and JEE, students can first understand the theory properly and then move to objective questions and numerical problems.
This saves time, but only when the basic concepts are clear. Simply reading a chapter for the board exam and expecting that it will automatically prepare you for JEE is usually not enough.
Do Not Keep Collecting Study Material
It is common to start with one book, then add another one after watching a recommendation online, and eventually end up with several unfinished resources.
More material does not necessarily mean better preparation. A limited set of reliable books, notes and question sources is easier to revise. NCERT deserves special attention, particularly for Chemistry, while JEE-level practice can be added after the concepts have been understood.
Use Previous Year Questions Before You Think You Are Ready
Students sometimes keep PYQs for the final stage of preparation. There is little reason to wait that long.
Once a topic has been studied, solving its previous year questions can show whether the concept has actually been understood. A chapter may seem easy while reading it, but the questions can reveal exactly where the confusion starts.
Wrong answers are useful here. Instead of simply checking the solution and moving on, note what caused the mistake. Was the formula forgotten? Was the question misunderstood? Or was the calculation wrong?
Treat Mock Tests as Practice, Not Just Tests
A mock test is useful even when the score is not impressive.
The important part comes after the test. Look at the questions that took too long, the silly mistakes, the topics that were skipped, and the questions that could have been solved with better time management. Doing this regularly can gradually improve both speed and accuracy.
There is no need to start with frequent full-length tests if the syllabus is still incomplete. Chapter-wise and part-syllabus tests can be used first, followed by full papers as preparation progresses.
Keep Boards in the Picture
JEE preparation should not push Class 12 board studies completely aside. School notes, NCERT, written practice and previous board questions still need regular attention.
One practical way to manage this is to increase board-focused study as school exams approach while continuing a smaller daily JEE practice routine. This prevents a complete break from JEE preparation.
Consistency Matters More Than Extremely Long Study Sessions
Studying for ten or twelve hours one day and then losing momentum for the next two days is unlikely to help much. A shorter but regular study routine is easier to maintain.
Some days will be more productive than others. That is normal. What matters is getting back to the routine, checking what is pending and moving forward instead of trying to compensate with unrealistic study hours.
JEE Main preparation during Class 12 becomes much easier when students stop treating every part of the syllabus as a separate task. A sensible routine, focused resources, PYQs, regular testing and timely revision can make the workload more manageable.
