Genuine, Top Grain, or Full Grain? What Leather Jacket Labels Actually Mean

Being genuine simply means that the jacket was made from actual animal hide. However, it does not provide you with information about the particular hide section used, the method of treatment, and the durability of the leather jacket. Two leather jackets may claim to be genuine leather but will differ vastly from one another. Selling leather jackets online since 2013, we have heard this query many times over.

How is a hide constructed?

There are layers in a hide. The topmost layer is very dense and tough, and it also has the natural surface. Below it, the fibers become looser and softer. In tanneries, the hide is separated according to the layers, and each one gets its own label.

Full grain

It is the finest grade where no sanding has been done to it. Here you will find pores, small scars, and other natural markings, which is what makes it special. It is the toughest of all and is very breathable too. It will darken with age and get a patina, which cannot be replicated. But the drawback is that it is stiffer and more expensive.

Top grain

Also, the top layer, but the surface is lightly sanded to even it out and then finished with a coat. It looks cleaner and more uniform. It feels softer from the first day and needs less breaking in. It's a little less rugged than full grain, but it's still a serious material, and plenty of well-made jackets use it. Ours are genuine top grain.

Genuine leather

As far as a grade goes, it normally refers to the bottom layers of leather that have been separated from the top layer. This is definitely genuine leather. However, it is less durable than other grades, as the fibers tend to be less strong. There is normally a printed texture on the outside.

Bonded and faux

Bonded leather is scraps glued together with a plastic coating, and it tends to flake. Faux leather has no hide in it at all. Neither is a crime if the seller says so plainly. The trouble starts when a label hints at something it isn't.

The grade and animal are two very different entities

This misunderstanding occurs very frequently. The grade relates to the part of the hide that is being considered, while the animal is a whole other decision. Lambskin is very smooth and very light; it normally comes in at 0.6mm to 0.8mm thickness. Cowhide is tough and heavy; it comes in at around 1.0mm to 1.2mm thickness. Sheepskin is very soft and warm; this is why it is chosen for winter weather.

Suede is not a grade. This is a treatment done to the inner side of the hide that creates a velvet surface.

Thus, top grain lambskin and top grain cowhide will never feel the same.

How to check before you buy

Start with the surface. Real hide has small irregularities. If the grain pattern repeats perfectly across the whole jacket, it was probably stamped on.

Then use your nose. Leather smells earthy and a bit rich. Plastic smells like plastic, and you'll know it when you get it.

Look at the edges and the inside too. A raw, slightly fuzzy fiber edge is a good sign. A smooth fabric or plastic backing isn't. Feel is a clue as well. Real leather tends to warm up in your hand, while plastic stays slick and cool.

Online, read the specs. A seller who knows the product will name the grade, the animal, and the thickness. If all you get is the word "genuine" and nothing else, ask questions before you pay.

Which one should you buy?

It depends on how you'll wear it.

For soft and sharp-looking leather, there is nothing quite like top grain leather. For a piece of clothing you can grow old with in decades to come, and if you do not mind the break-in period, then full grain leather is the way to go. For ladies' leather jackets, the same applies, although care must be taken regarding the fit in the shoulders and weight of the leather, owing to the different way that lambskin and cowhide feel.

And if a tag only says "genuine leather" with no other details, treat it as a question mark rather than a promise.

One last thing

A good jacket doesn't need a fancy label to prove itself. It needs honest specs, decent hardware, and stitching that holds. When you're comparing real leather jackets, look for sellers who tell you exactly what you're getting and give you a fair window to send it back if it doesn't feel right. Ours is 30 days.

That's it. Next time you flip a tag, you'll know what it's really saying.
